September 11 (Slichot): Crimes and Misdemeanors
Slichot, the Saturday night before Rosh HaShanah and continuing through Yom Kippur, is a time of focusing on the errors and misdemeanors that we all have been guilty of, and attending to addressing and redressing them, seeking forgiveness for ourselves and granting forgiveness to others.
For the return of the film club, we have chosen a movie that addresses these themes: Crimes and Misdemeanors, featuring Martin Landau, Woody Allen, Mia Farrow, Alan Alda, Anjelica Huston, Jerry Orbach and Sam Waterston.
Woody Allen describes the themes of his 1989 comedy-drama as an argument about G0d. Where is G0d? Does the world adhere to moral certitude according to G0d's laws? Or is it chaos, a nihilist mash-up of humanity's basest, most cynical impulses?
