Avodat HaLev: Prayers, Songs and Community (Beyt Knesset and Library)

Service of the Heart-Avodat HaLev
an All-Day Intensive

with Rabbi Dorothy Richman
followed by a wine and cheese reception

What: interactive text study, singing niggunim (wordless melodies), and active experimentation with prayer and melodies.  And lunch, too.

Who: anyone who is interested in finding more meaning in prayer, learning new melodies, singing in community, or learning Jewish texts.

How Much: this event is $10 for Etz members who pre-register on our website by midnight on Wednesday, February 6. Non-members can pre-register for $50. Walk-ins will be welcome on a space-available basis for $25 for members and $72 for non-members at the door.

Rabbi Dorothy Richman serves as the rabbi of Makor Or: Jewish Meditation Center and previously served as rabbi for Berkeley Hillel and Congregations Sha'ar Zahav and Beth Sholom.  As she told the J., “For much of my life, singing has been this thing I do on the side. I almost pull it out as a party trick… When I did sing secular music, even originals, in bars, I found that there was something missing. And as much as I enjoyed it, it wasn’t something that I felt on its own was meaningful enough.” When she sang as a prayer leader in her own style, she said, it gave her a taste of “what it looks like if all of me shows up.” Dorothy recently released an album of original songs, Something of Mine, largely based on texts from the Jewish tradition.
